The Beauty of a Blank Space
As a maternity photographer, I’ll let you in on a secret: an empty room can be the dream location. No clutter. No visual noise. Just light, shape, and the story of you.
- It puts you at the center. Minimal backgrounds draw the eye to your expression, your hands, your bump, your connection with your baby.
- Timeless over trendy. Clean walls and simple lines won’t date your photos in a year.
- Light becomes art. With fewer objects competing for attention, window light carves elegant highlights and soft shadows.
- A sense of calm. Negative space creates breathing room—perfect for the quiet, expectant energy of maternity.
- Endless versatility. One blank room can look like a studio, a fine-art set, or a cozy nook with just a chair and a curtain.
This is what I look for in your "empty" room ...
- A window (any size). North or east light is lovely, but I can work with any direction; the key is soft, indirect light.
- One clean wall. White, cream, or a muted color is a bonus, but texture (plaster, paneling) adds character too.
- Floor space. Enough room to step back 6–10 feet; hardwood, tile, or carpet all work.
- A doorway or corner. Doorframes and corners give natural framing and depth.
What should you wear in a minimal space?
- Neutrals or soft tones. Cream, oatmeal, taupe, black, or muted pastels photograph beautifully.
- Texture over pattern. Knits, linen, silk, and ribbed fabrics add interest without stealing the show.
- Form-skimming silhouettes. Dresses that drape or hug your bump, open cardigans, or a button-down with bralette for an editorial feel.
- Partner + kids: Keep to the same palette for a cohesive, airy look.
